CORNER
Collapsible, expandable & knock-down.
We humans are becoming ever more numerous on the planet, and more and more people are living on their own. We have to learn to live in less space, and we will benefit from having space saving furniture, which can be reconfigured to accommodate different use cases. To this end, the table in the Corner series revisits the Dutch pull-out system.
Corner is a furniture series comprised of a pull-out table and accompanying benches made from the material ‘Layers’, which is a new material developed by Dinesen. Layers is similar to CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), which is originally produced for the construction industry as an alternative to concrete modules.
The properties of the material enable a high degree of material reduction, and thereby afford the furniture in the Corner series their light and floating appearance without compromising strength and stability.
With Layers, Dinesen has created a floor plank comprised of three layers of cross laminated solid timber planks. This cross lamination opens up an interplay between sheet wood and solid wood furniture allowing for entirely new production- and function possibilities. The three layers introduce a new strength to sheet material allowing for a thinner thickness, because the cross-lamination makes the sheet more structurally sound than similar thickness solid wood sheets. Corner has grown out of the materially based possibilities that were initially designed for the construction industry.
The table reinterprets the classical principle by exposing the middle frame[NH1] thereby giving the table a light and floating appearance, such that it takes on a modern, practical and almost architectural shape.
All the furniture in the Corner series are knock down and can be disassembled and flat-packed, which reduces the CO2 emissions considerably (transportation and shipping are the greatest source of CO2 emissions from wood furniture). The solid laminated sheets extend the product lifetime and afford the joint hinges a high degree of strength, making the furniture resilient both in use and to repeated assembly and disassembly.
The cross lamination allows for sanding of the sheet material thereby enabling repeated restoration and reparation, which further increases the product lifetime of the furniture.
